California
Well, I am about to begin the last week of my first phase at WyoTech, so I figured it’s about time for an update. So far, my experience in Sacramento has been pretty good.
The climate here is not exactly what I thought it was, nor is it what other people have told me it was. Right now, it’s 89 degrees and sunny, and humidity is only 21% – an average day in Sacramento. Occasionally it gets hotter, and occasionally we have some smoke creep in from the numerous wildfires that are currently raging in other parts of California, but overall it is really quite pleasant. It never gets as humid here as it does in Minnesota, and it never rains. In fact, I think I’ve only seen clouds on maybe 3 different days the whole time I’ve been here, and they were those little white ones too. I’m sure this will change when winter comes, but I’m not too worried since a lot of rain is better than a lot of snow.
Then there’s school. Simply put, WyoTech rocks. Taking night classes was an excellent idea; going to school from 4:30pm to 1:40am allows me to stay up until 4 or 5 in the morning and get up at about 1 or 2 in the afternoon. Perfect. I get plenty of sleep and still don’t have to worry about being late to school. Plus, there are less than 30 students in my class because most students take day classes. It’s not just the schedule that’s great either – the classes are awesome too. Having just finished the last lesson for the Engine Management Systems 1 phase, I can say I’ve learned more useful information in the past 5 weeks than I did my entire time in high school. Not to mention having a good time while doing it.
There are plenty of cool things within driving distance to do on weekends too. Like last weekend when my roommate and I went to an NHRA drag racing event at Infineon Raceway. The school gave us free tickets too, and we got VIP passes to hear some cool stuff from some of the racing teams. Then we got to watch as much drag racing as we could handle. That had to be about the loudest thing I’ve ever heard. Some of the cars were doing 1000′ races in just over 5 seconds, and hit close to 285 mph.
After the races, we decided to go check out San Francisco. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in one place before. Traffic was horrible, there were seas of people all over, and after an hour of searching we still couldn’t find a place to park. So we went across the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island and took a few pictures before we left. Pictures
Our living situation is pretty good too. We managed to get a decent size condo with a 2-car garage for a good price. We also managed to find a free recliner, as well as a cheap couch and pool table on craigslist, all of which are slightly worn but of surprisingly decent quality. We live in a good neighborhood about 10-15 minutes from the school, 15-20 minutes from downtown Sac, and about 5 minutes from all the shopping and food we ever need.
Now I just need to find a job…
